CEBC Business Meeting 19. - 23. September 2008
42 delegates and guests from 21 countries attended the meeting in the Belgian capital. Most of the delegates participated in the trip on Sunday to the DEMOCO factory in Mouscron (picture left) followed by a guided tour of Ghent.
The meeting was hosted by
SECO (Bureau de Contrôle Technique Pour la Construction).
Building Control in Belgium was one of the meeting's main topics. The General Manager of SECO, Yves Pianet (also former Vice Chairman of CEBC) presented a comprehensiv review of the Building Control System in Belgia, followed by a discussion on how process certification can facilitate or strengthen Bulding Control, presented by Benny De Blaere, Managing Director of the Belgian Construction Certification Association.
Philippe Samyn, Principal Partner at Samyn and Partners, shared his experience on the Positive Input of Building Control on Contemporary Architecture, using projects in Belgium, Albania and Antarctica as practical examples.
A wider perspective on Building Control and ease of obtaining a building permit in countries all over the world was given by Carolin Geginat of Global Indicators and Analysis Group (GIADB) Financial and Private Sector Development - The World Bank, Washington, USA.
Her presentation showed how a dataset of 10 indicators on the ease of doing business around the world is used in benchmarking, and as reform inspiration to adopting best practices for governments. Most of the CEBC member countries was given high rankings in the World Bank survey.
The first session on Tuesday dealt with Concrete - on Design and Execution of Precast Concrete presented by Bert Marynissen (Senior Engineer, SECO) and Concrete as the Building Material of the Future, presented by Jean-Pierre Jacobs - General Manager of FEBELCEM.
Manfred Tiedemann reportet on the CEBC Building Defects Workshop held in Brussels on 18. June 2008, and 5 expert reports was made available to the members.
